Independent Study Program

The Independent Study Program is a tutorial-based contract between an individual student and a teacher. Qualified students will be allowed to work independently with a teacher to fulfill credits, which they are missing. The curriculum of the program will depend greatly on the needs of the student and the agreement between the student and the teacher. Although the student and teacher may determine the exact curriculum, the course still needs to meet graduation requirements in order to count towards a Pinkerton Diploma. All independent studies must be arranged by the chairperson and approved by the principal.

Correspondence Courses

Correspondence Courses allow students to earn credit by completing classes at home. For a course fee students are provided with the materials they need to complete the course curriculum. All studying and class work is done at home, and exams are mailed to the correspondence school. This course of action is ideal for students who need to make up credit or only need a few credits to graduate. Five weeks is the minimum time allotted to complete one course and students may take as long as one year to complete a course.  A variety of subjects is offered including English, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Computer Studies, Automotive, Building, Business, Drafting, Electrical, Art, and Home Living. In order for a correspondence course to count towards a student’s high school diploma it must meet the guidelines outlined in the Student Handbook, which are stated as follows:

Under certain conditions, credits earned through successful completion of correspondence courses will be accepted, provided the courses meet state standards and requirements, and provided the courses were approved by Pinkerton in advance. No correspondence courses may be substituted for any of the required courses for graduation except for make-up credit. Correspondence courses, except for make-up, may be used for electives only. Students who are out of school due to long-term health issues may develop a plan with their 504 or IEP team using correspondence courses approved by department chairs that meet diploma requirements. Plans require approval of the headmaster and/or Board of Trustees. See your counselor for more information.

Under certain conditions, credits earned through successful completion of correspondence courses will be accepted, provided the courses meet State standards and requirements, and provided the courses were approved by Pinkerton in advance. To be considered for credit, a correspondence course must:

a.      replace a course for credit that the student previously failed with a minimum grade of 50 –or-

b.   serve as an elective in the student’s overall program

Pinkerton Academy Evening Division

The Evening School Division at Pinkerton Academy is designed for students who did not do well in the Pinkerton Day Program and have since withdrawn for the Day Program. Evening School offers a more flexible schedule and smaller classes. Unlike the Day program evening classes will not meet five days a week, however courses will still meet for a minimum 45 hours. Pinkerton Academy Day School

Pinkerton Academy Day School is the traditional school that Pinkerton offers to all of its students.  PACE offers a unique plan by allowing its students to take classes both during the day and in the evening.  By offering this option it allows students to take the classes that they want, and better fit classes around their own schedule.  Unlike night classes, classes taken during the day will meet five days a week, and students are required to attend all five days.

Classes at Local Colleges

New Hampshire Community Technical College at Pinkerton Academy

New Hampshire’s system of post-secondary vocational-technical education developed in response to conditions in New Hampshire following the end of World War II. Recognizing that many soldiers, sailors, and airmen, among others, would be demobilized and in need of retraining for civilian life, two State Trade schools were developed. Since that time, the New Hampshire Community Technical College System has grown to include four colleges comprised of seven institutions.

One of the four colleges falling under the auspices of the System is The New Hampshire Community Technical College at Manchester/Stratham. Serving the needs of the Merrimack Valley and Seacoast regions, the College is comprised of four campuses with locations in Manchester, Stratham, Derry, and at Pease International Tradeport in Portsmouth. These campuses are governed collectively by the state’s Governor, Executive Council, System Board of Trustees, and individually by Advisory Committees, a President and a Chief Campus Officer.

The college enrolls about 4,000 students per semester and offers more than 40 degree and certificate programs as well as workshops and professional development programs. Its collective facilities include the Center for Academic Planning and Support, two Learning Resources Centers, and library support at Pease International Tradeport, state-of-the-art instructional labs, auditoriums and full-service Childhood Education Center at the Manchester campus. All campuses are accessible to all people with physical challenges.

Derry Satellite

Increasing community access for residents of the fast-growing area between the Massachusetts border and Manchester, our Derry satellite campus is located in the vocational center at Pinkerton Academy, the public high school serving the community. This satellite program offers Human Services and Early Childhood Education programs and a variety of courses form other programs from Accounting to Welding.

New Hampshire Community Technical College System Mission Statement:

The New Hampshire Community Technical College System is committed to providing comprehensive, market-driven, accessible, quality programs of higher education and services that respond to the needs of students, businesses, and communities.
